Winn Creek Boxers is a small American/European
AKC Registered Boxer Kennel located in Haw River, NC.
While Haw River is a small town, we are centrally located
within the state about 3 1/2 hours to the beach
and roughly the same distance to the mountains. My love
affair with Boxers began in 1998 with the purchase of
my first Boxer, Shere Khan Winnix of Winn Creek (Khan).
After much research I decided not to breed Khan since
he was not really close to the 'standard' for a Boxer
and that is where my search started for a foundation
to start my own breeding program. In January 2010, Shere
Khan passed away, after giving me 11 wonderful years
of companionship and love.
Since I decided not to breed Khan,
in 2006 I added Oraios to my kennel, in 2007 I added
Deimos, in 2008 I helped with the birth of Rige (from
a breeding between Oraios and Ruger from Barrel Creek
Kennels), and in 2009 I added Proteus, a Russian Import.
In 2010 I will be adding a Full European female to my
kennel that has German/Hungarian/Russian bloodlines.
I feel the mixture of Championed American and European
bloodlines will produce a great looking and healthier
Boxer, which is the direction that my kennel is heading.
A lot of people ask me why I chose
these unusual names for my dogs especially the
veterinary staff that takes care of my Boxers, as they
always love to try to pronounce my dog's names when
I bring them in! When I was young I loved the book titled
The Jungle Book and the tiger in the story
was named Shere Khan. When my Shere Khan was a pup his
stripes made him look just like a little tiger and the
thought came to me to name him after the tiger in the
Jungle Book story. As for my other boxers, I started
with a Greek theme and it has kind of stuck on me. I
have always loved studying Greek Mythology but I didn't
want to do the usual 'Zeus' and 'Apollo' that most people
use. So after researching Greek Mythological Gods/Goddesses'
names I chose less mainstream ones for my males. For
my females I have used words from the Greek language
itself, but plan on incorporating Goddess names for
any pups I add in the future. So, in order by their
age, the following are their names, how to pronounce
them, and what they mean: Oraios (pronounced Oh Ray
Ohs) means "beautiful"; Deimos (pronounced Dee Mohs)
is named after one of the sons of the Greek mythological
God of war Ares his name means 'terror' or 'dread';
Rige (pronounced Rye Ja) means "striped", and Proteus
(pronounced Pro Tee Us) means "first', which is appropriate
since he is my first Boxer with European bloodlines.
A mouthful to be sure, but at least no one can say my
dogs have common names!
While I do not currently show my
dogs in conformation or Schutzund, it is one of my long
term goals that I am looking forward to achieving. Currently
I am focusing on using my foundation stock to better
the Boxer breed as a whole, and to that end I offer
a health guarantee on all the dogs I produce. In 2010
I will begin health testing all of my Boxers for the
ARVC gene, the DM gene, and will have a complete Thyroid
panel done. I will put the results of each dog's tests
under their respective names on the "Males/Females"
page of the website, so check back often for updates
as tests are completed. You can learn more about these
tests on my "Health
Testing" page. My dogs live inside with me 24/7
and have grown up with my three children which
means that the temperament of the Boxers that I own
and breed is of utmost importance. Feel free to look
around my site and enjoy the pictures of my Boxers and
if you have questions or want to just talk about Boxers
in general, give me a call!
